How long is too long for a cat without food?

Short answerContact your veterinarian promptly if your cat stops eating or eats less than usual. Do not wait for a time limit, and do not force food into the mouth. A meal log can help the vet, but must not delay care.

Why appetite loss matters

Cornell explains that when a cat is not eating, stored fat can move to the liver faster than it can be processed. This can contribute to hepatic lipidosis, a potentially fatal condition. Obese cats have a higher incidence, but other body conditions can be affected too. Appetite loss alone does not establish this diagnosis.

Cornell's risk warning

Cornell warns that sustained appetite loss can severely affect a mature cat after as little as 24 hours; for kittens younger than six weeks, 12 hours without food can pose a lethal threat. These are descriptions of risk, not safe waiting periods or a diagnosis of hepatic lipidosis.

"Just being picky" is not a diagnosis

Cornell lists new food and changes involving other animals among possible reasons for food avoidance. iCatCare also describes stress, illness, pain and nausea as possible contributors. These possibilities are not a home diagnosis; a vet needs to investigate the cause.

What to do in the gap before the appointment

  1. Note the start point. When did the cat last eat a normal meal? "Sometime Tuesday" is harder to act on than a dated note.
  2. Record what you see - refused entirely, ate less, vomiting, drooling, hiding. The appetite log formats exactly this for the vet visit and prints.
  3. Offer, don't force. Fresh, appealing food in a quiet spot is fair; Cornell warns that forcing food into a cat's mouth can make food aversion worse.
  4. Yellow ears or gums, repeated vomiting with food refusal, or a cat that is weak, hides and avoids food, or drools at food needs urgent veterinary advice. Contact a vet immediately for a young kitten or an already ill cat that is not eating. Do not wait to finish the log.
